The Barbizon First Bra Weekend
Celebrity parenting revelations shared
No, it doesn’t only happen in the movies.

During the Barbizon First Bra Weekend, celebrities Pia Magalona, Yayo Aguila, Mariz Ricketts and Jamie Rivera proved that a smooth sailing relationship between mothers and their pre-teen daughters can also happen in real life. Their secret? Good old communication.
“It helps to have someone you can talk to, unfortunately, tweens don’t realize that sometimes the person who can best understand are standing right next to them—their mothers,” said psychologist Dr. Aurora Foronda. “It’s heartening that through this Barbizon initiative, celebrity mothers showed that with efforts to communicate, it’s not that hard to have a respectful, loving relationship between mothers and their daughters.
“Give your kids at least 20 minutes of your full attention—meaning turn off your phones and stop reading the newspaper. This way, tweens can feel secure that you’re willing to listen,” said Yayo Aguila, mother of three teenage girls. Yayo’s parenting style is to share her own teenage experiences with her kids. “Don’t be afraid to tell your daughters about your first crush or embarrassing boo-boos. Telling these stories will make them realize that just like you did, they can also surpass the pre-teen stage while having fun in the process,” she advised.
Meanwhile, singer-actress Mariz Ricketts stresses that communication doesn’t necessarily mean talking to your tweens 24-7. “When I notice that my teenage daughter Marielle has her mood swings, I leave her alone and come back when she’s ready to talk. Knowing when to give your tweens enough space for them to think or sort things out is also important.”
The four celebrity mothers all agreed that they should welcome all their kids’ questions about menstruation, crushes, pimples, depression and everything else in between—including wearing first bras.
“Most people believe that a girl starts wearing one only when she’s at a certain age which is not always the case. One ten year old girl may already need to wear a bra, while another wont need it until 5 years later. So it really all depends on one’s body developments,” says singer and former Miss Saigon star Jaime Rivera.
Rapper Francis Magalona’s wife Pia observes how easy it is now to find fashionable intimate apparel for girls between 9 and 13 years.
Pia Magalona affirms that brands such as Li’l Barbizon make the search for that perfect first bra a lot easier. “ During our time, we had to make do with plain sandos or worse, hand-me-down sandos. Now, our tweens are lucky because they have products from Li’l Barbizon Girl, which provides just the right amount of support.” she added.

Li’l Barbizon Girl carries light support bras for young girls who have just started to develop breasts but do not fit the standard bra sizes yet. Li’l Barbizon Girl training bras are made without underwire and come unpadded or with thin soft pads ensuring comfort for its tween wearers. Of course, the fact that in comes in variety of trendy designs is a definite plus.
Indeed with constant communication and parenting allies such as Li’l Barbizon Girl, its easier for mothers and daughters to become what Mariz Ricketts described as “BFF or ‘best friends forever.”
